This Date in MLB History

• 1946: Jackie Robinson debuted as a second baseman for the Montreal Royals (International League) and became the first recognized black player in organized ball in the century.
• 1958: At the Los Angeles Coliseum in front of a crowd of 78,672, the Dodgers played their first game in the City of Angels. Carl Erskine got the win besting Al Worthington and the Giants, 6-5.
• 1981: Reds pitcher Tom Seaver struck out Keith Hernandez in the fourth inning of a 10-4 loss to the Cardinals, becoming the fifth pitcher in major-league history with 3,000 career strikeouts.
• 1987: Mike Schmidt hit his 500th career home run, a three-run shot off of Pittsburgh's Don Robinson in the top of the ninth inning to give the Phillies an 8-6 win. At the time, Schmidt was the 15th major-league player to reach the 500-HR plateau.
• 2007: Mark Buehrle threw the 16th no-hitter in White Sox team history in a historic night at U.S. Cellular Field (Chicago defeated Texas 6-0). Buehrle allowed one base runner, a walk to Sammy Sosa (who was later picked off first base), and was helped out by two HRs by Jim Thome.
